Pipeline Monitoring

The implementation of SensorTran’s advanced fiber optic Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) solutions represents a significant advancement for pipeline management and control.

These DTS systems provide an affordable, proven and reliable solution for both short and long transmission, transfer, and distribution lines and offer clear operational advantages for pipeline integrity monitoring, product and flow assurance and pipeline intrusion detection.

A typical DTS pipeline management implementation would consist of one or more DTS units connected to optical fiber(s) which are installed onto the pipeline. Depending on the application, fibers can be either run along the length of the pipeline or be spirally wrapped to increase effectiveness of the system.

SensorTran’s intelligent DTS monitoring solutions provide real-time dynamic temperature and strain data with high accuracy, fine resolution, and fast measurement speeds. They provide up to 40,000 discrete temperature and intrusion measurement readings, along the complete length of the lines, together with their individual locations. These systems are perfectly suited for pipeline management and control.

Applications for this technology include:

Pipeline Integrity Monitoring - system identifies the location of leaks by detecting small, local temperature events along the pipeline. Ideal for lines carrying gasses (utilizing the Joule-Thomson effect), heated and cryogenic products.

Product and Flow Assurance - system provides a temperature profile along the complete length of the pipeline for output to a condition monitoring system or heating control system. Ideal for molten products, heavy oil (including subsea lines and risers).

Pipeline Intrusion Detection - intrusion detection is provided by the ability to detect and determine the location of small strain events along an optical fiber (positioned above the buried pipeline) caused by the pressure of people or equipment.

By the nature of their underlying technology these systems have substantial benefits over other pipeline monitoring systems:

Not affected by day-to-day transients such as pump start/stop and control valve operations or changes to delivery rates

Immune to pipeline characteristics such as diameter, changes in diameter, internal roughness, valve restrictions, pipe bends, etc.

Immune to condition changes such as ambient temperature, product viscosity or phase changes

Since the optical sensing fiber is installed to the outside of the pipeline these systems do not prevent pigging operations
